The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a measure (H.R. 6094) to delay the implementation of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Fair Labor Standards Act overtime rules from Dec. 1, 2016, to June 1, 2017.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) and would postpone implementation of DOL regulations finalized in May this year that would raise the salary threshold for overtime pay from $23,660 to $47,476 per year with adjustments made every three years.
By a vote of 246-177, the Regulatory Relief for Small Businesses, Schools and Nonprofits Act was passed. The measure was received in the Senate on Sept. 29; experts are unsure if the bill is likely to pass, especially considering the recent veto threat from the Obama administration.
AMOA is monitoring the measure closely along with the Partnership to Protect Workplace Opportunity (PPWO), a coalition AMOA recently joined that advocates for legislative relief from the potential negative impact posed by the new overtime rules.
